Micks Gasfitting Service
Gas Fitting Services in Noosa North Shore
We are on the Tewantin side of the ferry, so the crossing is routine
Noosa North Shore has no bridge, no mains gas and no hardware store. Every trade that reaches your door crosses on the cable ferry at Tewantin, and every part they forget means a second crossing on another day. That is why gas fitting services here work best when the job is planned properly before anyone gets on the barge. Micks Gasfitting Service is based in Tewantin, right at the crossing, and has been servicing this community for more than 25 years. We arrive with the parts the job needs, handle LPG installation, gas hot water, appliance servicing and compliance certificates, and aim to finish in a single visit. Licensed: QBCC 1065417, Gasfitting Licence 21197, Plumbing Licence 18701.

The work
Gas fitting in Noosa North Shore
Properties on the North Shore are unlike anything else in the Noosa Shire. Beyond the ferry landing the road gives way to sand, the houses thin out into beach shacks, holiday homes and rural blocks, and services most suburbs take for granted simply do not exist. Gas is not a convenience here. It is frequently the only practical way to cook and heat water, and on genuinely off-grid houses it is doing work that an electricity connection does elsewhere.
That raises the stakes on getting the installation right. An undersized cylinder bank on a Sunshine Beach house is an inconvenience; here it means a trip back across the river. We plan around that constraint: bulk cylinder installation, off-grid gas hot water, appliance servicing and certification, arranged so the job finishes in one crossing.
Local conditions
What shapes the work in Noosa North Shore
The Noosa River separates the North Shore from the rest of the shire, and there is no bridge. That is not an accident of history. There are no plans to provide road or bridge access, in order to keep the area a wilderness, and development is restricted for the same reason. Vehicle access is by cable ferry across the river at Tewantin. Beyond the landing the locality runs north into large sections of the Great Sandy National Park, taking in the small town of Teewah and the southern end point of the Cooloola Great Walk. At the last census the resident population was 253.
The practical consequence for gas is total dependence. There is no reticulated supply anywhere on the North Shore, and mains electricity is limited or absent on some blocks, so LPG frequently carries cooking, hot water and heating on its own. An undersized cylinder bank, or a hot water system that outruns its supply, is not a minor annoyance in a place where you cannot drop by a supplier.
The environment adds to it. Sand, salt-laden air and high humidity attack external regulators, hose assemblies and burner components faster than inland conditions do, and many properties sit vacant for weeks or months between visits. Appliances that have been idle through a humid summer routinely come back with blocked injectors, perished hoses and corroded fittings, and they get discovered the evening the family arrives for a holiday rather than on a convenient weekday morning.
Access constrains the working day itself. Ferry operating hours bracket the job at both ends, so a fault found late in the afternoon cannot always be finished the same day if it needs a part.
We adapt in three ways. Appliance makes, models and cylinder arrangements get confirmed before we travel, so the van is loaded correctly. Automatic-changeover cylinder banks are recommended so supply does not fail without warning. And owners are encouraged to bundle work, a heater service, a hot water check and a caravan certificate together, so one crossing covers the property properly.
What we offer
Gas services across Noosa North Shore
-
01
Off-Grid and LPG Gas Hot Water
Where power is limited or absent, gas hot water is the only workable option. We install and repair instantaneous and storage systems sized against the cylinder bank supplying them, so the burner is not starved under load. Battery-ignition units suit properties without reliable mains power.
On a North Shore block the hot water unit and the cylinder bank have to be specified together, because there is no second trip to fix a mismatch cheaply.
-
02
Bulk and Multi-Cylinder LPG Installation
We install multi-cylinder banks with automatic changeover, so an empty bottle switches over without interrupting supply, and size the installation on actual usage rather than guesswork. That matters most where gas runs cooking, hot water and heating together.
Running out of gas here means a ferry trip with an empty bottle, so the changeover indicator is what lets you swap on your own schedule.
-
03
Gas Cooking Appliances
We supply and install cooktops and upright stoves, correctly jetted for LPG and adjusted on commissioning. For houses left empty for long stretches we also check ventilation and isolation arrangements, so an unattended property is not left with gas standing at an appliance for months.
Holiday houses on the North Shore can sit closed up for a whole season, which changes what a safe shutdown looks like.
-
04
Compliance Certificates
Caravans, campers and camper trailers are constant here, and a current gas certificate is standard for sale, hire and insurance. We inspect the installation, pressure test, correct defects where we can on the spot, and issue the certificate.
Done on site at the campgrounds rather than in a workshop across the river, which is the whole point of booking it with someone who crosses anyway.
-
05
Gas Repairs and Leak Detection
We diagnose and repair cooktops, hot water units, heaters and BBQ connections, and pressure test where a leak is suspected. If you can smell gas, shut the cylinder valve at the bottle, leave the area ventilated and call before using the appliance again.
Sand, salt and long idle periods are hard on North Shore installations, so a fault after a vacant season is the normal case rather than the exception.
-
06
Gas Heater Servicing
Portable radiant and convection heaters do the work through the short winter. Stored eight or nine months in a sandy, salty environment, they need checking before use. We service burners, test hoses and regulators, and replace units where repair is no longer economical.
Worth bundling with a hot water check on the same crossing rather than booking it as its own trip.
How the work is done
Licensed, checked and quoted before it starts
Plenty of Sunshine Coast gas fitters will not cross the river, and those who will often price in the uncertainty. Being at the Tewantin end of the ferry makes a North Shore job a short trip rather than a logistical problem, and knowing what is on the other side means we plan for it. So we ask more questions on the phone than most: appliance make and model, cylinder setup, how the property is accessed, whether anyone will be there. It means the van is loaded for your job specifically.
Based minutes from the ferry crossing. The Tewantin base sits at the river, so the schedule works around ferry operating hours instead of being caught out by them.
More than 25 years servicing this community, which is why the questions asked on the phone are the right ones rather than a generic checklist.
Single-visit planning. Appliance details are confirmed before the booking and likely parts are carried, because a return trip here costs a day rather than an hour.
Bulk and multi-cylinder LPG installations, sized for properties with no mains gas and, in many cases, limited electricity, where gas carries the cooking and hot water load together.
Fully licensed. QBCC 1065417, Gasfitting Licence 21197 and Plumbing Licence 18701, so certification is issued by the same licensed business that did the work.
Combined visits welcome. Service the heater, check the hot water and certify the van in one trip, priced as a single list rather than as three separate callouts.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Do you actually cross the ferry, or is the North Shore outside your area?
We cross. The base is in Tewantin, at the crossing, so the North Shore is a normal part of the service area rather than an exception. We schedule around the ferry's operating hours and plan the job so it can be finished in one crossing wherever possible. Tell us your access arrangements when you book, including whether the property needs four-wheel drive access.
How do I stop running out of gas at a property this remote?
Install a multi-cylinder bank with an automatic changeover regulator. When one bottle empties, supply switches to the next without interruption and an indicator shows which bottle needs replacing, so you swap on your own schedule rather than in the dark on a Sunday. We size the bank against actual usage, which matters here because gas often runs cooking, hot water and heating together.
Can gas run the hot water if the property is off grid?
Yes, and it is the usual solution here. Instantaneous LPG hot water units with battery ignition do not need mains power, so they work on properties running solar, a generator, or no electricity at all. The critical detail is matching the unit's gas consumption to the cylinder supply. An undersized bank will starve the burner and give inconsistent temperatures, so we check both together rather than just the appliance.
The house has been empty for months. Should anything be checked before we use the gas?
Yes. Long vacancies in this environment commonly leave perished hoses, corroded regulator fittings and insect-blocked burners and injectors. Before firing anything up after a long break, check for gas odour at the cylinders, look over the hoses for cracking, and if anything seems off, leave it isolated and call us. A pre-season service visit costs far less than a failure on the first night of a holiday.
Can you certify a caravan while it is parked at a North Shore campground?
Yes, we inspect and certify on site. We check appliances, pipework, hoses and ventilation, pressure test the installation and issue the compliance certificate. Where a minor defect is found we can often correct it during the visit. Let us know the van's make and appliance types when booking so the right fittings come across on the ferry.
Does a North Shore callout cost more than one on the mainland?
The work is priced the same way. The difference is travel and ferry time, which we are upfront about when quoting. The most effective way to keep the cost down is to bundle jobs: service the heater, check the hot water system and certify the van in the same visit. We quote the full list before travelling so there are no surprises.
The area
About Noosa North Shore
Noosa North Shore occupies the strip between the Noosa River and the open ocean, running north into the Cooloola country of the Great Sandy National Park. Access has always been by water: two cable ferries cross the Noosa River at Tewantin, and there are no plans to build road or bridge access, deliberately, so that the area stays a wilderness with restrictions on development. That constraint shaped the settlement into something low-density and largely unserviced. Today it holds holiday homes, rural blocks, campgrounds, the small town of Teewah and the southern end point of the Cooloola Great Walk, with a resident population of 253 at the last census and no schools in the locality at all.
We are a service-area business and there is no shopfront on the North Shore. The area is serviced from our established base in Tewantin beside the ferry crossing, with bookings by phone or through the contact form.

Where else we work
Our North Shore work is run from Tewantin at the crossing, and the same coverage extends across the river and lake country on the mainland side. If your property is over the water or up towards Boreen Point, the pages below cover the same licensed gas fitting and LPG installation in your area. For anything on the North Shore itself, call 0417 794 901 before you book so we can plan the crossing properly.
