Micks Gasfitting Service

Gas Fitting Services in Sunshine Beach

Built for salt air, steep blocks and long pipe runs

Mon to Fri 7:00am to 5:00pm · Saturday and Sunday by appointment

Sunshine Beach sits on a steep escarpment facing straight into the open ocean, and gas installations here wear out faster because of it. Corroded regulators, seized fittings and perished hoses turn up on properties barely a few years old. Gas fitting services in Sunshine Beach need someone who inspects the supply side rather than only the appliance in front of them. Micks Gasfitting Service covers the streets above the surf beach, the Duke Street village and the ridge running south towards Sunrise Beach, from a Tewantin base, and has been servicing this community for more than 25 years. Licensed: QBCC 1065417, Gasfitting Licence 21197, Plumbing Licence 18701.

The work

Gas fitting in Sunshine Beach

Sunshine Beach has two kinds of housing living side by side: the modest brick and timber beach houses that went up as the suburb grew, and the contemporary architectural rebuilds that have replaced many of them, with glass, decks, outdoor kitchens and pool areas oriented at the view. They ask completely different things of a gas fitter. The older houses often have ageing pipework and cylinder setups that were never intended to run a modern instantaneous hot water unit. The new builds want gas taken out to a deck, a BBQ, a fire feature or a pool heater, well away from where the bottles sit.

People looking for gas fitting services in Sunshine Beach usually fall into one of those two camps. We handle both, from upgrading a tired cottage installation to running new LPG lines for an outdoor kitchen and a gas hot water installation on a rebuild.

Local conditions

What shapes the work in Sunshine Beach

One condition shapes almost every job in this suburb: exposure. Sunshine Beach faces the open ocean with no headland in front of it, and the prevailing onshore winds carry salt straight up the escarpment. External gas components corrode noticeably faster here than on properties even a few kilometres inland, and the failure usually appears as an intermittent fault, inconsistent hot water or a burner that will not hold, long before anyone thinks to look at the regulator. Anyone who skips the supply side ends up replacing appliances that were never the problem.

The topography compounds it. The suburb climbs a steep escarpment, blocks are frequently split level, and on many of them the cylinders sit at street level while the kitchen, deck or pool heater is a full storey below. That gives long pipe runs where undersized pipework causes pressure drop and an appliance that never quite performs. It is a common finding when a gas BBQ or a pool heater has been added to an existing installation without recalculating the supply.

The housing mix adds a third layer. Original beach cottages sit alongside substantial contemporary rebuilds, so a single street can hold both a forty-year-old installation and a brand-new outdoor kitchen. Duke Street at the top of the hill serves both, along with a steady stream of visitors.

So the work goes in a particular order: corrosion inspection of all external components as a standard part of every visit, supply-side diagnosis before condemning an appliance, and proper pipe sizing calculations for long or stepped runs. That is what keeps gas fitting services in Sunshine Beach from becoming a cycle of replacing appliances that were never the actual fault.

What we offer

Gas services across Sunshine Beach

  • 01

    Gas Hot Water Installation

Instantaneous or storage, sized on the household rather than on the old unit's badge. We check the pipework and cylinder capacity can actually feed a modern unit before recommending one. Gas hot water typically costs less to run than electric storage.

Many Sunshine Beach cottages still run hot water on installations designed decades ago, so the supply is checked before anything is specified.

  • 02

    Outdoor Kitchens and BBQ Connections

A plumbed-in gas BBQ or outdoor kitchen removes the small-bottle shuffle entirely. We run and pressure test new lines from the cylinder location to the deck, terminating in a bayonet or a fixed connection, with fittings selected for coastal exposure.

Best planned during a deck build here rather than retrofitted, because the run from street-level bottles to a lower deck is long enough that pipe sizing decides whether it works.

  • 03

    Pool and Spa Heating

Gas heaters bring a pool or spa up to temperature in hours rather than days, which suits properties used at weekends or let out seasonally. We install, service and repair gas pool and spa heating, and size the gas supply to the heater's demand.

Undersized supply is the most common reason a Sunshine Beach pool heater underperforms, and it is usually mistaken for a faulty heater.

  • 04

    Cooktops and Cooking Appliances

Supplied, converted to LPG and commissioned properly. On rebuild projects we set the gas point before cabinetry goes in, which avoids the compromise of a bench cut that does not quite suit the appliance. Yellow, uneven flames and poor simmer control almost always mean an unconverted natural gas cooktop.

Sunshine Beach rebuilds usually specify the kitchen before the gas, so getting in early is what keeps the appliance and the opening matched.

  • 05

    Gas Repairs and Leak Detection

Corroded regulators and hose assemblies, changeover valves that have stopped switching, cooktop and hot water faults, and leak testing. We check external components even when you have called about something else.

Given the salt exposure here, the external fitting is usually where the real problem is hiding rather than inside the appliance.

  • 06

    Gas Heaters and Compliance Certificates

Portable convection and radiant heaters for the short winter, serviced and leak tested before use after months in storage. We also inspect and issue compliance certificates for caravans and campers, and test installations after a gas supplier changeover.

Heaters stored through a salt-air summer here come back with more corrosion on the hose fittings than an inland unit of the same age.

How the work is done

Licensed, checked and quoted before it starts

The two things that decide a Sunshine Beach job are salt and slope, and both of them are about the supply side rather than the appliance. Pipe sizing on a split-level block has to be calculated rather than estimated, and external components have to be looked at before they fail rather than after.

Corrosion inspection on every visit. Regulators, pigtails, hoses and brackets are checked as standard, because in this suburb they are the most likely point of failure.

Correct pipe sizing for long runs, which is essential on split-level blocks where the bottles sit at street level and the outdoor kitchen is two levels down.

Licensed and verifiable. QBCC 1065417, Gasfitting Licence 21197 and Plumbing Licence 18701, all checkable with the QBCC before you book.

More than 25 years servicing this community, long enough to have watched the suburb's original beach cottages get replaced one by one and to know what is behind the walls of the ones that have not been.

Renovation and new-build work, coordinating with builders so gas points, cylinder locations and appliance clearances are set before the walls and decking close up.

Quoted before we start, with a repair figure alongside the replacement figure wherever a repair is genuinely viable.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Why do my gas fittings keep corroding?

Because Sunshine Beach faces the open ocean with no headland shielding it, and salt-bearing onshore wind reaches every external component of the installation. Regulators, pigtails, hose fittings and mounting brackets are all affected. It is normal here, but it does mean external parts need inspecting more often than a manufacturer's general guidance suggests. We check them on every visit and flag anything showing early corrosion so it can be replaced on your schedule.

Can I run a gas BBQ or outdoor kitchen off the house supply?

Usually yes, and it saves constantly swapping small bottles. The work involves running a properly sized line from the cylinder location to the deck, terminating in a bayonet or fixed connection, then pressure testing it. On split-level blocks the run can be long, so pipe sizing matters. Undersized pipe is why some retrofitted BBQs never get proper heat. It is best planned while a deck is being built.

My hot water temperature keeps fluctuating. Do I need a new system?

Not necessarily. Fluctuating temperature is far more often a supply problem than an appliance problem: a corroded or failing regulator, a changeover valve that is not switching, or a cylinder too small for the burner's demand. We test the supply side first. Replacing the hot water unit when the regulator was the fault is an expensive way to keep the same problem.

We are rebuilding. When should the gas fitter be involved?

Earlier than most people expect, at the point where kitchen, deck and cylinder locations are being decided. Getting gas points, pipe routes and appliance clearances right before cabinetry, cladding and decking go in avoids expensive rework. We are happy to work alongside your builder and set out the gas requirements at the planning stage.

Do you install and repair gas pool and spa heaters?

Yes. Gas heating brings a pool or spa up to temperature in hours, which suits properties used at weekends or let out seasonally. The most common problem we are called to is a heater that never quite reaches temperature, and the cause is usually gas supply undersized for the heater's demand rather than a faulty unit. We size the supply to the appliance when we install.

What affects the price of a gas fitting job here?

The appliance is generally the predictable part; the pipework is not. A straight cooktop swap on an existing gas point is quick. New lines to a deck or pool area, relocating cylinders, upgrading a regulator or bringing an older cottage installation up to current standards all add labour and materials. We quote before starting, and where a repair is a genuine option we price it against replacement so you can choose.

The area

About Sunshine Beach

The area south of the Noosa headland was formerly known as Golden Beach and was rarely visited before the 1920s. In 1928 Thomas Marcus Burke gained land there in exchange for building roads and bridges from Tewantin, and after the Second World War his son Marcus marketed it under the name it carries today. Development stayed slow for decades, because the surf-facing escarpment was harder to build on than the flatter land inland and road access was poor. Growth came properly through the 1980s and early 1990s: the state school opened in 1982, the Catholic primary school and St Andrew's Anglican Church in 1990, and the high school in 1992. The suburb's northern boundary adjoins Noosa National Park, which has capped expansion in that direction and preserved the bushland backdrop. Duke Street remains the village centre, and at the 2021 census the population was 2,480.

We are a service-area business and do not operate a shopfront in Sunshine Beach. The suburb is serviced from our established base in Tewantin, and all bookings are made by phone or through the contact form.
